This is written for patch 2.6.0 balance.

Overview[]

Wraithguard are basically a short-range artillery unit, which is slightly odd since the short range makes them somewhat vulnerable to the very thing they should counter, ranged infantry spam (Space Marine and Chaos Tactical Squads, for example, can get upgrades that absolutely melt heavy infantry). They are also easily neutralized by any sort of melee (Assault Squads and Bloodletters being typical counters) and outranged by other artillery (a Plasma Cannon Devastator will lock down the squad easily and Zoanthropes will whittle it down from safe range). This makes them fairly ineffective in most matchups.

Wraithsight[]

A special feature of Wraithguard is that they only move at full speed under the Wraithsight aura. This ability is possessed by:

  • The Farseer
  • The Warlock hero
  • Guardian squad leader Warlocks
  • Wraithguard squad leader Warlocks

Hence, using Wraithguard to their fullest means either investing in a squad leader of their own or tagging along one of the units possessing Wraithsight.

A negative effect of the buff is that when the model with Wraithsight dies, nearby Wraithguard are stunned (cannot move or attack) for a few seconds and take 100 points of damage.

Upgrades[]

Warlock[]

The Warlock squad leader is a good upgrade as such, allowing the unit to move faster, but it does raise the squad's cost to Dow2 req 16465 Dow2 pow 1665 and the Warlock can get expensive if he starts getting killed. If you have a double/triple Guardian build, you may want to use the Guardian Warlocks for the speed buff instead. The Farseer is also handy, as she has both Wraithsight and Guide.

Wraithbone[]

This upgrade allows healing the squad for a modest amount of health, making them immobile while healing. It doesn't really seem effective enough for the cost - spending the resources on something else will probably help more.

Synergies[]

  • The Farseer will grant the Wraithsight bonus and using Guide is very effective on Wraithguard, giving them respectable range for those insane guns
  • Guardian Squads with Warlocks can be used for Wraithsight
  • Having a Shuriken Cannon Team will help both protect the Wraithguard from melee and "snare" infantry units with suppression so they can be hit
  • Warp Spiders can snare vehicles for the Wraithguard to gun down
